Little Did He Know

Can anything good ever come of these words?

Yesterday some serious shit went down in Tucson, AZ.  Twenty people were shot at a Safeway Rally for United States Congresswoman Gabriel Gifford's.  The congress woman was the primary target of 22 year old gun man Jared Lee Loughner.  The gunman was taken down two bystanders but not before fatally wounding six victims including a nine year old girl.  Congresswoman Gabriel Gifford was shot in the head at close range and is currently in critical condition.

Loughner has alleged links to the radical Tea party movement.  He also has a somewhat disturbing You tube channel and my-space (which has been removed).  Check this for more details.

While the events of the day unfolded I was safely riding my bike.  I only learned of the shooting in the evening, and (to rest any concerns that my mother may have) it occurred across town from my condo.  This will no doubt be big news for a while.  It appears that I really am living in the wild west.

Gates pass

Gates pass short loop.

This one needs to be extended.  The percentage of city riding was too much for me. blegh.  Climbing Gates pass was awesome.  In the worlds of Arnold Schwarzenegger.  "I'll be back".

Working Hard or Hardly Working

Dear Canada,

I hope you enjoy your blizzards and sub-zero temperatures.  In Tucson it was plus 20 today.  This morning I went for a short bicycle ride and then spent the afternoon next to the pool.  Yes we have a pool!  Fitness is a simple recipe.  Ride hard, ride lots, and chill out.

Tucson, Az

It is hard to fathom what we just accomplished.  Three 20 year old cyclists from Canada just drove clear across the continent.  From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada to Tucson, Arizona, USA. WOW what a trip.  In 33 hours we covered 3,378km that is 9% of the circumference of the world.  We crossed 2 Canadian provinces and 5 American states.  Our longest rest stop was 15min.

We battled blizzards in Canada, Montana, and Utah.  We saw Salt-lake City, the Las Vegas Strip, the Hoover damn and drove Mario-cart rally on the free ways of phoenix.  We arrived at our condo with no furnature and no food.  We quickly had a bite to eat and set up a camp site in the living room for a good 12 hour sleep.

We spent the next day with light recovery training and some serious nesting activity.  It almost qualifies as a household. I took a great many pictures on the way down, and I am currently battling with our week internet connection to try to get them posted.  The data stream is not great so they may remain a mystery for a while.  Look forward to it.

Here We Go, FOR REAL

Well, this all just got real.  I almost thought it wasn't going to be real, but I am on my way to Tucson, AZ.  I have spent the last months planning and packing and planning.  I was beginning to feel that it was a just a dream something intangible that wouldn't resolve.  Yet here I am, I thought it wouldn't come and now it all happens so fast.

I am overnighting in Moose Jaw.  The car is packed to the brim.  The route is laid into the GPS and tomorrow I look forward to 2,822km to cross the continent in a Honda Fit.  The final Destination and home for the next 2 months is Tucson, AZ.  Tucson holds the promise of warm weather and the freedom to be singularly purposed. The next two months will be dedicated to training, eating, breathing and dreaming bicycles.

The first step is the drive and I am even looking forward to it.  Masochistic this may be, but some times you need to be a little bit of a masochist to have success.  I am convinced this drive will test the ability to creatively entertain myself.  I have some plans, and I will fill the world in after we arrive.
